Red, VT Cádiz

This extraordinary wine has wowed everyone who has tasted it. It's unusual for many reasons, not least because it's made by an Australian, it's from Cadiz in southernmost Spain, it's 100% Syrah and boasts a whopping 15% alc. b.v.. But best of all, it's a stunning wine of fabulous power and depth.

Contino Gran Reserva 1998
Red, D.O.Ca. Rioja
€34.95 (approx. £24.47)
The Gran Reserva from Contino is a great example of a successful marriage of tradition and modernity. It's a Gran Reserva – respecting the venerable Rioja tradition of classifying different types of barrel ageing. But at the same time, it is made using contemporary techniques. The result is a wine of stunning elegance and complexity. The nose is multi-layered, displaying stewed forest fruit, liqueur-like hints, gentle oak, and toasted notes. On the palate, it's chewy, silky, rounded and enveloping, with a long, fresh, satisfying finish. This Contino is now at its peak of expression and consumption.
